What is an athletic mouth guard?

When playing high-contact sports, patients must protect themselves from injury. While many sports require participants to wear certain protective gear, such as helmets, this doesn’t eliminate the fact that trauma and injury can happen to the smile. Wearing a mouth guard while participating in sports can greatly support the protection and prevention of injury.

What sports might benefit from wearing a mouth guard?

Many high-contact, high-impact sports that might benefit from participants wearing mouth guards, including:

  • Football
  • Soccer
  • Boxing
  • Hockey
  • Marital arts
  • Skateboarding
  • Basketball

Why choose mouth guards from a dental practice?

While many mouth guards can be purchased over the counter at local drugstores, these are often ill-fitted and do not provide near as much protection as a custom mouth guard made at a dental practice. Our team uses a digital scan of the patient’s teeth which is sent to a dental lab to make a mouth guard that fits precisely over the natural teeth, ensuring better cushioning and protection when impact occurs to the mouth.
