Minimally Invasive Dentistry
At North Aurora Smiles in North Aurora, IL, we have an overall philosophy to be minimally invasive when doing any dental procedure. It is why Dr. Hammad Aziz is an active member of the Academy of Biomimetic Dentistry. The academy trains dentists to rebuild teeth to their proper biologic foundations and to use materials that simulate the natural teeth more closely.
What is minimally invasive dentistry?
Ensuring that all procedures are as conservative as possible, preserving the natural tooth structure, whenever possible. Patients will feel at ease in the dental chair knowing that only the damaged or decayed tooth structure will be removed with a goal of preserving the sound tooth for increased strength and retention of the restoration.
It is with this philosophy in mind that we at North Aurora Smiles also offer air abrasion technology, or “no-drill dentistry.” With this technology much of the good tooth can be preserved since no drill bit actually touches the tooth. With this method, fine streams of particles are aimed at the area to remove the decayed portion of the tooth to prepare it for a filling. It’s almost like a mini-sandblaster that gets the tooth ready for a filling when a cavity is present.
What are the benefits of minimally invasive dentistry?
- Maintaining natural tooth structures
- Longer lasting restorations due to smaller fillings and more tooth preserved
- Less drilling needed
- Faster and effective treatment of various dental concerns
- Less post-op sensitivity
- More cosmetic by preserving the visible tooth structure

Frequently Asked Questions
Minimally invasive techniques in dentistry often involve using advanced technologies to remove only the decayed or damaged portions of a tooth. By minimizing the removal of healthy tissue, these methods reduce patient discomfort, improve recovery times, and extend the lifespan of the natural tooth. This approach is particularly beneficial in restorative and cosmetic procedures, where maintaining tooth integrity is crucial.
Minimally invasive tooth preparation refers to the process of preparing a tooth for a restoration, such as a filling or crown, while removing a minimal amount of healthy tooth structure. This technique prioritizes the preservation of enamel and dentin, reducing the risk of weakening the tooth. Dentists usually have advanced training in this field and use specialized tools, and materials to target only the damaged or decayed areas, ensuring that the tooth remains strong and functional after treatment. This approach is often used in procedures like cavity fillings, veneers, and crowns, where maintaining the tooth’s natural strength and aesthetics is essential.
Minimally invasive dentistry includes a range of techniques and practices aimed at conserving natural tooth structure while effectively addressing dental issues. It encompasses preventive care, such as fluoride treatments and sealants, early detection of dental problems, and the use of advanced technologies like laser dentistry and Air Abrasion. Treatments focus on preserving as much of the healthy tooth as possible, using conservative methods for fillings, crowns, and other restorations. This approach also includes patient education on oral hygiene to prevent the need for more extensive procedures, promoting long-term dental health.
Minimal intervention dentistry (MID) in general practice is a philosophical approach that emphasizes prevention, early detection, and conservative treatment of dental issues. An example of this approach is Biomimetic Dentistry. The goal is to preserve the natural tooth structure and avoid invasive procedures whenever possible. MID includes regular dental check-ups, patient education on proper oral hygiene, and less invasive treatments like conservative, smaller, tooth preserving restorations. In general practice, dentists adopting MID or the Biomimetic philosophy aim to manage dental problems with the least amount of intervention, reducing the need for extensive procedures and enhancing long-term oral health.
