Toothaches can be distressing for anyone, but even more so for children. A visit to North Aurora Smiles in North Aurora, Illinois, can determine the cause of your child’s pain so they can get proper treatment. The quickest way to relieve toothache symptoms in children is by seeing any member of our kids’ dental team. These FAQs provide greater insight into the causes, symptoms, and treatment of toothaches in children.
Cavities are one of the primary causes of toothaches in children. A child’s sweet tooth combined with poor oral care habits can easily lead to decay and toothaches. Left untreated, decay can enter the pulp of the tooth and infect the blood vessels and nerves, causing throbbing pain. Toothaches can also be caused by dental injuries like cracked or broken teeth, emerging teeth, or something getting stuck in between your child’s teeth. An evaluation by our dentists will pinpoint the cause of your child’s pain so that we can provide pain relief.
Toothaches can cause the following symptoms:
The first step is getting a diagnosis of your child’s condition. A thorough dental checkup by our dentists will determine what’s causing the pain so we can recommend treatment. Treatments may vary depending on your child’s age, symptoms, and overall health. Our treatment options include:
Although there are numerous home remedies to relieve toothache pain, these will only provide temporary pain relief. They won’t resolve the root of the problem, which could worsen with time. Our dentists will treat the source of your child’s pain to restore your child’s oral health and provide long-term pain relief.
We recommend teaching your children good oral hygiene habits and ensuring they see a dentist bi-annually for routine exams and cleanings to keep decay and toothaches at bay. We also offer preventive treatments like fluoride and dental sealants to keep your kids’ teeth strong, healthy, and cavity-free. A healthy diet restricting sugary foods and drinks can also help keep toothaches to a minimum.
