No Drill Dentistry

Both adults and children alike often have a fear of the dental office. Dental anxiety is nothing new to the team at North Aurora Smiles in North Aurora, IL. This is why Drs. Hammad Aziz and Stephanie Janes offer no-drill dentistry. The sound of the dentist’s drill often causes many patient’s anxiety. We are happy to offer a no-drill option, in certain cases, by using a different technique known as air abrasion dentistry.

What is air abrasion?

Air abrasion, sometimes referred to as “microabrasion,” is a way of performing certain dental treatments without using a dentist’s drill. When treating cavities, this technology is best used when the decay is caught in the early stages. Instead of drilling away decay and invariably some natural tooth structure to place a filling, air abrasion uses very fine particles to wear away the decayed tooth enamel gently. This is all achieved without the friction of a dental drill, using almost a method similar to sandblasting to get the same results.

Is the use of air abrasion safe?

Air abrasion is absolutely safe!. It is also effective in achieving the same results as a dental drill can without the sound and friction. An additional benefit of air abrasion is that it is very conservative in the preparation of the tooth. Unlike a dental drill bur bit which is actually spinning and physically touching the tooth to remove the decay, with air abrasion nothing touches the tooth, thus only the decay is removed and tooth is preserved. This fits the philosophy of the doctors of North Aurora Smiles, to be minimally invasive.

Why choose air abrasion?

Air abrasion:

  • Preserves tooth structure
  • It does not generate pressure, vibration, or heat
  • Almost never requires the need for anesthetics
  • It eliminates the need for a dental drill
  • Reduces the risk of tooth fractures and chipping
