Gum recession is a prevalent dental issue where the gum tissue surrounding teeth recedes or thins out, exposing tooth surfaces or roots. While some degree of gum recession may be a natural part of aging, it can also result from poor oral hygiene practices, aggressive tooth brushing, gum disease, hormonal changes, or genetic predisposition. Regardless of the cause, gum recession poses several risks to oral health. At North Aurora Smiles in North Aurora, Illinois, our team is skilled at diagnosing and treating gum recession.
Exposed tooth roots not only compromise the smile’s appearance but also increase sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures and make teeth more susceptible to decay. Furthermore, gum recession can lead to gum disease, as it creates pockets where bacteria can accumulate and cause infection. Left untreated, severe gum recession can eventually result in tooth loss and compromise the overall stability of the dental arch.
Fortunately, advancements in dental technology have led to innovative treatments for gum recession, including pinhole gum surgery. Unlike traditional gum grafting techniques, which involve the use of donor tissue and sutures, pinhole gum surgery is minimally invasive and does not require grafts or incisions. Instead, a small hole is made in the gum tissue using specialized instruments. The tissue is then gently repositioned to cover the exposed tooth roots, and collagen strips may be inserted to stabilize the gums and promote healing.
Pinhole gum surgery offers several advantages over traditional gum grafting techniques.
